The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum invites the public to the opening of the Abolition Hall of Fame Induction Weekend Friday evening, October 18 at 7 p.m. with an introduction to North to Freedom, an original documentary film from Brian Frey, a filmmaker and Senior Director of Television and Special Projects for WSKG Public Media. Frey will examine the important role that Upstate New York played in the Underground Railroad during the years leading up to and during the American Civil War. Saturday morning, October 19 at 9 a.m. Norman K Dann PhD, author of Practical Dreamer: Gerrit Smith and the Crusade for Social Reform, will guide a tour of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark (5304 Oxbow Road, Peterboro NY 13134). Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 the Abolition Symposia will be held at the Peterboro Methodist Church, (5240 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro NY 13134) beginning with Catharine Coffin: Able Partner in Justicepresented by Joanna Hahn, Central Region Director, Catharine and Levi Coffin State Historic Site in Fountain City Indiana. At 2 p.m. Hahn will present The Mysterious Road: Levi Coffin’s Underground Railroad Journey. At 3 p.m. Stephen Wyman, Falmouth, Maine, presents Abolitionist Rev. Leonard A. Grimes & His Unrelenting Quest to Lead His People to the Morning of Emancipation and the Noonday of Equality. At 4 p.m. Dr. James Mc Cune Smith, the First Black Doctor in America will be presented by Christopher Webber, San Francisco, CA. A 19th Century Antislavery Dinner inspired by Elizabeth Smith Miller’s 19th C. Cookbook In The Kitchen will be served at the Smithfield Community Center (5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro NY 13134) by the Peterboro United Methodist Church to diners with reservations received by October 15. Inductions and Presentation of the Inductee Banners will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2024, for Catharine White Coffin, Levi Coffin, Rev. Leonard Andrew Grimes, and Dr. James McCune Smith. Sunday, October 20, at 9 a.m. persons who want an Underground Railroad tour of Cazenovia will meet with Tom Bennett in the lobby of the Lincklaen House (79 Albany Street, Cazenovia NY 13035). |
Fifty dollar reservations for the 19th Century Antislavery Dinner are due by October 15. Fifty dollar registration covers all programs of weekend or seven dollar admission for each program. Registration can also be onsite.
