In her book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston describes the plight of her fellow Black women by saying that they are "the mules of the world". This visceral image brings to mind the double oppression Black women faced and continue to face today. Joanna Jimenez will present on the intersectionality of race and gender by speaking about the double challenge Black women face in a society that disadvantages them because they are women and because they are Black.
